Darryl Barr has been a Forensic Scientist – Firearms Examiner for 26 years in various locations across Canada and is currently Manager of the Calgary Police Service’s Forensic Firearms and Toolmark Laboratory. He is independently certified by the Association of Firearms and Toolmark Examiners (AFTE) and specializes in the 3D computer reconstruction of shooting events. After 18 years as a Firearms Examiner with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Darryl went on to open the first municipal forensic lab service in Canada in over 70 years. In addition to setting up the lab, he helped create service-wide police policies designed specifically to work with the lab in generating high-quality investigative leads from crime guns and shooting evidence. Having spent the last 7 years integrating a new firearms lab with newly created policing practices offers a unique perspective of what it takes for both a police service and a firearms lab to support an effective gun-crime fighting strategy through forensic analysis.
